This year, your child has the responsibility of reading 25 books which equals over 1 million words. Much of this reading will be done at home so that the school hours are used to concentrate on schoolwork. Children will record information about the books they read on their daily reading logs that will be stored in their literacy classrooms. One of the Georgia Performance Standards requires that all students read 25 Books which equals approximately 1 million words. This is essential for building and increasing your child’s reading comprehension. If you want more details about the 1 Million Words Campaign, ask your child's teacher. Students may take an Accelerated Reader test or complete a book report form to document and demonstrate their comprehension of the material that they have read.
By getting involved in your child's reading, you are giving him or her the best opportunity to become a fluent reader. Your child's ability to read is the best way to ensure that he or she does well in school. The secret to reading with your child is to make it warm, loving and enjoyable experience. Time spent sharing books with your child creates memories that both of you will always treasure. You don't have to worry about being a reading teacher. Your role is to support your child's reading and also be his or her Reading Buddy.
The books that your child will be reading as part of the 1 Million Words Campaign are supposed to be easy to read. Why are they easy to read? These books should be read for pleasure. We want children to have fun reading them, to dig into them and not want to put them down until each book is finished. If children read books that are too difficult, he or she won't be able to stick with them. They will be frustrated, and will put the books down, unread. We need your help in making sure that your child is finding books that are easy and fun for him or her to read.
