Vocal Abuse

Common signs of vocal abuse:

1.    Throat is tender to the touch after vocal use.
2.    Hoarse voice after singing.
3.    Need to clear throat for a period of time; frequent throat clearing which is worse after
       singing.
4.    Throat is very dry (Check for dehydration.)

Vocal Nodes are an accumulation of fibrous tissues on the vocal folds. They may be caused by:

1.    Lack of breath support
2.    Indiscriminate use of the singing voice (oversinging, improper technique, screaming,
       singing while tired.)
3.    Speaking incorrectly or forcing your sound.

During this time of year, with the temperature changing all the time, it is vitally important to take care of our instruments.

* Don’t yell or scream

* Drink plenty of liquids

* Warm up before singing

* When your voice feels taxed, give it a rest.
